BAE-CTF is Back!!!
The Operational Cyber Group from BAE Systems Digital Intelligence are pleased to work with the OU again to host a Capture the Flag event; two days of cyber security challenges and games. Now in its third year, following its huge success, anybody who is currently studying at the Open University and has a keen interest in Computer Science can sign up and play. There are prizes for the winning team! Also, those who took part in previous editions can join in again as all the challenges will be different. The event will take place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 February 2024, and is being held online so you can join from anywhere with an Internet connection. The event will start with a 15-minute briefing at 10:00 on Saturday where BAE Systems Digital Intelligence will introduce themselves and explain the rules of the event. The event will finish at 16:00 on Sunday with a 15-minute event highlights and awards presentation. You are not expected to be online for the full two days and you can attempt as many or as few challenges as you wish. BAE staff will be online between 10:00 and 16:00 on both days to provide hints and tips on the challenges and are happy to discuss careers in cyber security and software engineering at BAE Systems Digital Intelligence. The Capture the Flag platform will also remain available outside these hours until the event closes and allows you to participate in the challenges at times that are convenient for you. This is a team-based event for teams of 2 to 6 players. If you don’t have a team, then don’t worry – register and you be allocated to a team. The challenges will involve breaking into vulnerable websites, cracking ciphers, forensic analysis, reverse engineering and much more. No previous experience of these kinds of challenge is necessary; however, some experience with programming is recommended. The challenges are designed for students who like taking things apart and seeing how they work. If you are new to these activities, we highly recommend you look at the following sites, to get an idea of the kinds of challenges that will be involved:
Hack the Box
TryHackMe
Blue Team Labs
PicoCTF
Attack-Defense
Exploit Education"
CryptoHack
Defend the Web"
VulnHub
Starting: Saturday 17th Feb 2024 @ 10:00
Finishing: Sunday 26th Mar 2024 @ 16:00
- BAE Update: Many members from the OU played in the BAE CTF. It was an exciting weekend with lots of people losing sleep to work out challenges. This time they used MatterMost as a platform and as a result it was hard to keep tabs on who we have here was in what team. Either way the team that one did unreal and still no one know who the tean consisted off XD. It was a great learning curve again and next year I think we would most likely try and form teams, Then we have more to report back on. BAE don't publish result after thr event for privacy, so until next year!!

This year (updated late m0j0's bad) on a weekly basis the CTF team have competed in various CTF competitions. Some have went extremely well while others have proved very hard but we tried and learnt. The teams details can be found at CTFtime's website and we would encourage you to join to learn and have fun. Oh and capture the flags. You can find all the details to join the events in the Discord server and by getting a CTF role to open up our secret chat channel. All competitions are visible in the Upcoming section, so just keep an eye on it and hopefully we can see some new team members!!
Well this was a great experience from the members who played. As it was two long weeks it took the pressure off and allowed a lot of learnings whilst trying to solve some great challenges. Again we placed on the scoredboard pretty hign considering the 1000's of teams who entered.
OUCSS played well for an htb tournament we finished 471st out of 5693 teams which by HTB standards is pretty good. The team again lost sleep but some players came up with great solutions to the challenges we did get. Hopefully we can link some write-ups soon - collating the members notes is hard.
